Executive Summary—Focus on Ireland
Unlocking a World of Possibilities
Intel believes that young people are the key
to solving global challenges and that a solid
math and science foundation, together with
skills such as critical thinking, collaboration,
and problem solving, are crucial to their
success. Also, as a leading technology
company, we depend on the future availability
of skilled workers, a healthy technology
ecosystem and knowledgeable customers—
all of which are strengthened by initiatives
that allow students to experience and explore
project-based learning linked to science
and technology. Each year, Intel Ireland
contributes almost $1.8 million to local and
national education programmes that include
programmes for primary and secondary
school students, science exhibitions, post-
graduate research projects and equipment
donations to schools and universities.
Inspiring Young Innovators
In 2013, over 13,000 students from across
Ireland took part in science fairs that Intel
initiated or supported, giving them the
chance to engage in science through an
investigative approach to learning. We are
also a great supporter of Maths, Engineering
and Science Week, where students are given
the opportunity to visit the Intel Ireland site
and participate in science and technology
initiatives.
Fostering Entrepreneurship
For many years, Intel has invested in giving
social entrepreneurs and innovators the
education, skills, and resources they need to
improve communities and create sustainable
enterprises. The Intel Youth Enterprise
Ideation Camp is run in conjunction with
the Lions Club with the aim of creating
young innovators and empowering future
entrepreneurs to create solutions for today’s
problems and create employment. In 2013,
Intel also took part in the Intel Technology
To Market Accelerator@UC Berkeley
programme, which is a partnership between
the Intel Foundation and the Lester Center
for Entrepreneurship at the Haas School
of Business at the University of California
Berkeley. The programme teaches the most
cutting-edge Silicon Valley startup skills
to entrepreneurs from around the world,
providing them with real-world, immersive
learning about successfully transitioning
technologies into startups that benefit society.
Three teams from Dublin City University were
selected for the challenge for developing an
innovative, disruptive and scalable computing
technology in high-impact areas. The teams
then had the chance to travel to California to
participate in the global programme at UC
Berkeley.
Empowering Girls and Women
Women play a fundamental role in our
modern society, and it is crucial that they
receive support and encouragement for equal
participation and opportunity. In Ireland,
female entrepreneurship has tremendous
potential to create jobs and contribute to
economic growth. For this reason, Intel Ireland
partnered with DCU’s Ryan Academy to launch
the High Fliers Club, which aims to tackle
the challenges that face start-up companies
headed by women. Intel also collaborates with
Dress for Success, a non-profit organisation
with the goal of assisting low-income women
seeking employment and self-sufficiency.
In March 2013, Intel sponsored the Irish
premiere of Girl Rising, which is a full-length
feature film that promotes awareness of the
importance of girls’ education and is the
centrepiece of a global social action campaign
by the 10x10 organisation.
Intel’s success rests on the availability of skilled workers, a healthy
technology ecosystem, and knowledgeable customers. We believe that
education and innovation are crucial to driving economic growth. The
health of local economies—including those where our employees live
and work—depends on access to technology and quality education.
